Norway: Bergen to Tromso Northern Lights Voyage

A week to search for the Aurora Borealis at sea

A week to search for the Aurora Borealis at sea

A Norwegian voyage is a superb way to witness the Aurora Borealis, which is one of nature’s most astonishing and enthralling phenomena. On the Bergen to Tromso Northern Lights Voyage, you will spend six relaxing days sailing northwards along the spectacular coast of Norway, calling at sensational locations along the way. Beginning your adventure in the colourful city of Bergen, you will have the opportunity to witness the delightful architecture of Ålesund, learn about the Viking history of Trondheim, admire the beauty of the Lofoten Islands and finally, soak up the excitement of lively Tromso on your Northern Lights Voyage.

Your days will be filled with cultural discoveries and journeys into history as you visit each distinctive settlement. You will also get to appreciate the sheer splendour of Norway’s coastline, with its wild, fragmented islands, rugged snow-capped mountains and colossal fjords that stretch for miles and miles inland. Nightfall, however, is when the excitement really mounts, as every passenger waits in anticipation to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. Don’t worry if you feel you can’t stay up late, because you can request a wake-up call to your cabin to alert you to the presence of the Aurora, so you won’t miss your opportunity to witness one of nature’s most fascinating wonders.

  • Day 1 - Bergen

Arrive in Bergen, Norway’s second largest city and transfer to the docks where your ship awaits. Board and locate your cabin before sitting down to a delicious dinner prepared by the ship’s talented chefs. As the Tromso Northern Lights Voyage sets sail this evening, wrap up warm and head out on deck or watch through the windows of the Panorama Lounge to see if the Northern Lights appear to welcome you to Norway.

  • Day 2 - Ålesund

A week to search for the Aurora Borealis at sea - Ålesund

Our first port of call on the Tromso Northern Lights Voyage is the charming town of Ålesund. Its mix of architecture is quite unique to Norway, as it was rebuilt in an Art Nouveau style following a disastrous fire that razed the town to the ground in 1904. Discover more about Ålesund’s fascinating history today at the Municipal Museum.

    Meals included:Breakfast, Dinner
  • Day 3 - Trondheim

    Trondheim

Voyaging further north, the Tromso Northern Lights Voyage docks at the historic settlement of Trondheim, which was founded by the Vikings and once served as the country’s capital until the early 13th century. A stroll along the Nidelva River lets you admire the colourful and historic waterfront storehouses, while a visit to the Nidaros Cathedral introduces you to Norway’s most important Gothic monument.

    Meals included:Breakfast, Dinner
  • Day 4 - The Lofoten Islands

    The Lofoten Islands

Today the ship ventures between the thousands of mountainous islands that make up the Lofoten archipelago, one of Norway’s most treasured assets. The islands’ wild, rugged beauty constitutes a sanctuary for many of the country’s indigenous animals, such as whales, seals, seabirds and birds of prey. Docking at Bodø, you might like to take an excursion to Saltstraumen, the world’s strongest maelstrom, while later on in Svolvær, you can visit the remarkable Ice Gallery.

  • Day 5 - Tromso

    Tromso

We reach our final destination of Tromso on the Northern Lights voyage, where you will disembark and transfer to your hotel in the heart of this lively city. You are now well within the Arctic Circle, meaning that your chances of witnessing the Aurora Borealis are even greater. There are plenty of things to do in Tromso to enhance your experience of the Northern Lights, such as dog sledding, snowmobiling or reindeer sleigh rides, which take you out of the city and onto the surrounding plains where you can gain a fantastic perspective of the night sky. If you prefer to stay within the city, head to the Polar Museum, where you will find out everything there is to know about the ancient folklore of the Northern Lights.
